Children's Hospital at Westmead- Liver Transport Unit

With ICAP’s support, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead will be able to establish a brand new Liver Treatment Centre which will be a dedicated area for children to be seen by specialist medical professionals at their regular hospital appointments. The centre will provide a streamlined child friendly environment for day patients as well as outpatients with the aim of reducing hospital and emergency department admissions.

Charity Overview

The paediatric liver transplant unit was established at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) in 1986. Since then, more than 350 life-saving transplant operations have been performed on children who come to CHW from all over Australia. Paediatric liver transplant surgery is complex and requires a dedicated team of surgeons and anaesthetists. Following a transplant children require life-long medical monitoring, plus immunosuppression to help prevent transplant rejection.
