Charity Overview
Hillbrow, an inner city residential neighbourhood of Johannesburg, is at the forefront of social change in South Africa. There is a high incidence of HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, degradation of urban environments, drug dealing, prostitution and crime. Many of these issues are related to, or aggravated by a lack of social structure and unemployment. Outreach Foundation is committed towards reclaiming Hillbrow as a clean, crime-free and peaceful residential area.
The Hillbrow Music Centre offers music tuition in a safe environment for people of all ages living in the inner city and surrounding areas. Outreach Foundation’s core focus is to build self-respect and empathy through music education. Workshops, inter-school music events and camps are hosted each month to encourage a sense of community and togetherness. Learning music refines and motivates young people, improving and facilitating learning in school and life. Working and performing in ensemble groups also develops empathy and compassion which contributes positively to society. The music centre also encourages individuals to develop commitment through the self-discipline of daily practice and self-expression.
