Sailors' Society

Charity Overview

Sailors' Society provides a personal lifeline for merchant seafarers. Existing to enhance the well-being of the world's 1.3 million seafarers, the charity offers practical, emotional and spiritual support, through its port chaplains. The chaplains visit over 20,000 ships annually, addressing the needs of seafarers, irrespective of belief or nationality. The average time a seafarer is away from family is 270 consecutive days. During this period 51% have no access to phones or internet on-board. Unable to communicate freely, seafarers frequently suffer from stress and relationship-breakdowns. It is essential that they have someone to turn to when far away from loved-ones.
